The Showtime newcomer about an illicit romance between a novelist (Dominic West) and a waitress (Ruth Wilson), both of whom are married to other people, received rave reviews for its first season, the finale of which aired in December. The series also stars Joshua Jackson and Maura Tierney. West and Wilson both received acting nominations for their performances, with Wilson winning the award for best actress in a drama series. The Affair‘s accolades were just a third of the nine total nominations Showtime received.

The Affair beat fellow nominees House of Cards, Downton Abbey, The Good Wife and Game of Thrones.

In her acceptance speech, co-creator Sarah Treem, who previously wrote for and executive produced House of Cards, thanked Showtime president David Nevins for his support of the show, noting that he bought the show right after she and co-creator Hagai Levi pitched it to him, when they said they wanted to use the show to talk about marriage. Among others, she also thanked CBS CEO Les Moonves and the show’s cast, saying, “It is a privilege and an honor to write for talent of this magnitude and one that we as writers don’t take lightly.” She also thanked Levi for “the inspiration.”

As she was being played off, she thanked her parents, son and husband Jay Carson. “If I have learned anything from writing a show called The Affair, it’s how powerful and sacred and valuable our marriages are,” Treem said in closing.
