Ric Roman Waugh’s latest movie, Shot Caller, explores the question of what one would do if unexpectedly sent to prison, telling the story through the perspective of Jacob, played by Game of Thrones star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau.
In order to fully immerse himself in the system, the stuntman-turned-director volunteered at the Department of Corrections in California. “I wasn’t going to commit a crime to get inside,” he joked. “I did it the best way I thought that could give me an unflinching look at the system [on the] inside.”
Shot Caller completes Roman’s “Prison Trilogy,” which also includes Felon and Snitch. “Until you feel that tension yourself, then how could you ever play it in an authentic way?” said Roman. “That’s hopefully what the movies I make are.”
Helping create that authentic feeling is Coster-Waldau. “I knew I had the right partner in this movie,” the director told The Hollywood Reporter.
Coster-Waldau filmed Shot Caller in between seasons of Game of Thrones and Roman joked that Coster-Waldau, “did try to wear the armor” on set.
When asked about going in between his role as Jaime Lannister and others, the actor said: “Game of Thrones is a huge hit; it’s probably going to stay with me for a long time. It’s not bad, as long as I can keep working.”
“There’s no question that Game of Thrones enabled me to do those movies [Shot Caller and Netflix’s Small Crimes], so I’m not complaining.”
