Until Sabrina Carpenter stepped out on stage, the first instalment of Coachella this weekend felt somewhat lacklustre when it comes to style – despite the fact that the festival ordinarily serves up some of the biggest festival fashion moments of the year.

Nothing signifies the start of summer quite like Coachella, and with an archive of iconic looks from the music festival over the years, attendees are by no means short of style inspo when it comes to putting together their weekend 'fits. But while Harry Styles will forever remain a Coachella style icon after that plunging sequin jumpsuit moment with Shania Twain and his matching hot pink feather moment with Lizzo, this year's looks have so far been somewhat tamer.

Enter: Sabrina Carpenter.

Performing on stage over the weekend, the young musician and actress tapped into one of spring/summer's hottest trends via that ultra mini mini skirt. Picking up bonus points thanks to the skirt's pleating, you'd be forgiven for immediately presuming this was a Miu Miu look due to the Italian fashion house's laser focus on this particular trend.

It was, however, far more sentimental.

One of two custom looks worn by Sabrina over the weekend, both were designed by the late Roberto Cavalli, whose passing was announced only on Friday.

Whether Sabrina and her stylist had a quick outfit re-think on hearing the news – deciding to honour the late designer at the eleventh hour – or whether the looks were always in her Coachella plans is yet to be confirmed, but either way it was an undeniably touching fashion moment that really stood out this weekend.

Not to mention one that's tempted us even more to try the season's risquést hemline…
