If you feel stuck in a rut when it comes to youreyeshadow colours, now is the time to shake up your shades. Don't get us wrong - a brown smoky eye will always reign supreme when it comes to a go-to classic glamorous look, but there's more - many more - hues worth exploring.

One such shade just so happens to be the defining eyeshadow colour of the season - purple. Not only was the look a popular red carpet choice at this year's Grammy Awards, with singer Dua Lipa rocking a shimmering, violet eye and H.E.R wearing holographic purple shades, but it's also extremely versatile and easy to wear (yes, really).

As with all makeup, the key to the look is blending the right shades together in the right places to create a contoured, eye-opening effect, which, granted, is easier said than done. To many, the idea of choosing six different stand-out shades and blending them to create a daytime look might seem terrifying. And of course, with purple shades, there is always the danger that you'll end up looking like you've got a black eye.

But panic not, brands like Urban Decay, NYX and Huda are all adding lots of hues of purple to their palettes. Applied properly, purple not only suits all skin colours but it makes your eyes look brighter too. In fact, Hollywood makeup artist, Jillian Dempsey loves the look so much, he's called lilac shades "the new taupe".

Here's how to enjoy the trend according to the pros...

Start with a simple winged look

Makeup artist Katie Jane Hughes created the hashtag #biglilacenergy for her purple-loving looks. She likes to swipe glossy, pastel purple shadow across her lids. She says to start getting used to the colour you should try a winged-out liner using eyeshadow. Katie says that pretty much any pastel or medium-tone purple eyeshadow will work. Once you feel confident, up the ante with a dab of clear lip gloss on the lids to mimic Katie's look.

Choose the right shade of purple

Lighter skin tones can stay in the range of soft colours like lilac and pinky purples, while medium and deep skin tones can enjoy the full spectrum, but shimmering finishes will elevate the look and make the shades pop more.
