Netflix‘s The Witcher has cast acclaimed actor Laurence Fishburne in a major role.

Fishburne (the Matrix and John Wick franchises) has joined season four as Regis, a fan-favorite character from The Witcher books and games.

The character is in saga creator Andrzej Sapkowski’s novel Baptism of Fire as “a world-wise Barber-surgeon with a mysterious past” who will join Geralt (now played by Liam Hemsworth, taking over for Henry Cavill) on his adventures.

Fisburne joins returning actors Anya Chalotra, Freya Allan and Joey Batey in the new season. The season’s official description: “After the shocking, Continent-altering events that close out season three, the new season follows Geralt, Yennefer and Ciri, who are faced with traversing the war-ravaged Continent and its many demons apart from each other. If they can embrace and lead the groups of misfits they find themselves in, they have a chance of surviving the baptism of fire — and finding one another again.”

The Witcher has had a rough road the past couple years, with Cavill departing, a former writer criticizing the show’s creative, and Sapkowski seemingly dissing the series. The show’s 2022 prequel effort, Blood Origin, was also a disappointment. But the Witcher team hopes to win back its fans with a fourth season reset and Hemsworth (the Hunger Games franchise) taking over the lead.

There’s no season four premiere date yet set, but sometime in 2025 seems likely.
