ROME — Actress Milly Vitale, who starred in some of the most popular films of the post-war Italian cinema boom, died early Thursday. She was 74.
Vitale’s family did not immediately release the cause of the actress’ death, but she was known to be in poor health in recent years.
Vitale broke into cinema with Giacomo Gentilomo’s 1947 adaptation of “The Brothers Karamazov” and was one of the first Italian actresses to become well known in Hollywood, setting the stage for bigger stars to follow, such as Sophia Loren. She had not acted professionally since the early 1970s.
