Veteran stage actress Lesley Manville (Phantom Thread) has accomplished a rare feat with her Oscar nomination for best supporting actress this year. She and ex-husband Gary Oldman, whose prosthetic-rich performance as Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour has made him the best actor front-runner, are only the sixth pair of parents in Oscar history to receive simultaneous award nominations.

  • Joanne Woodward and Paul Newman

During their 50 years of marriage, Joanne Woodward and Paul Newman acted alongside each other in 10 films. Though each amassed an impressive number of Oscar nominations — Woodward had four and Newman had 10 — they were only nominated together for their 1968 film Rachel, Rachel, which stars Woodward as an unmarried schoolteacher who experiences a religious awakening. Woodward earned a best actress nomination while Newman, who produced the film, was up for best picture.

  • Gena Rowlands and John Cassavetes

Gena Rowlands and John Cassavetes met while Rowlands was auditioning for acting school long before either became famous. Within months, they married. Cassavetes, who is perhaps best known for starring opposite Mia Farrow in Rosemary’s Baby (1968), directed several films featuring Rowlands, including Faces (1968), but the movie that earned them a simultaneous trip to the Oscars was A Woman Under the Influence (1974), which scored Rowlands a nomination for best actress and Cassavetes a nomination for best director.

  • Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins

Until their split in 2009, Susan Sarandon (of Thelma & Louise fame) and Tim Robbins, who starred in The Shawshank Redemption (1994), were together for 23 years. During that time, they collaborated on Dead Man Walking, in which a religious advisor develops a deep bond with a death row inmate. Robbins received a best director nomination for the film, while Sarandon was up for best actress.

  • Frances McDormand and Joel Coen

Frances McDormand and Joel Coen, who married in 1984, are best known for the film they made together: Fargo (1996). McDormand won best actress for playing a no-nonsense police detective (who could not be more different from her role in Three Billboards, for which she is nominated this year), while Coen — along with his brother — received nominations for best director, best original screenplay and best film editing for his work on the film.

  • Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are still in the process of settling their divorce, but back in 2009, the duo — who were together for 12 years, married for two, and have six children together — the received separate Oscar nominations. Jolie went up for best actress for her role in Changeling, where she stars as a mother whose son has gone missing and whose “discovery” by the police five months later only raises more questions, while Brad Pitt earned a best actor nomination as a man who ages in reverse in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Jolie and Pitt have also starred together in numerous movies, including Mr. and Mrs. Smith.

  • Lesley Manville and Gary Oldman

Manville and Oldman married in 1987 and divorced in 1990. In those three years, they had one son. Addressing her simultaneous Oscar nominations, Manville told The Hollywood Reporter, “It’s completely nice and friendly. We were all together on Christmas year before last. We spoke on the phone the other day — he rang me when he saw Phantom Thread, I rang him when I saw Darkest Hour. Just because you’re divorced from somebody, doesn’t mean you hate them.”
